How Do I Know If I Have a Vibrio Infection?
Only a doctor can make a diagnosis of a Vibrio infection. If you have eaten fresh crab and have become sick, urgent medical attention is recommended. Also, early medical treatment can greatly reduce the risk for long-term complications, like the potential development of necrosis fasciitis (flesh-eating bacteria).
It is best not to panic, but it is a good idea to monitor your health and symptoms in the days after eating the product.
The Outbreak
According to a notice from the Maryland Department of Health, fresh crab products imported from Venezuela have been linked to 7 Vibrio illnesses in the State of Maryland. Of those with confirmed illnesses, 2 have been hospitalized.
There have not yet been reports of necrosis fasciitis (flesh-eating bacteria), which is a long-term potential complication of vibrio infections. No deaths have been reported at this time.
Those who have become ill were exposed to Vibrio both in their households and from eating at restaurants. Those who became ill ate dishes like crab cakes, Seafood salad, and Crab Benedict. The crab meat that is in question was unpasteurized. The specific brands, retailers, and restaurants involved in the sale of the infected crab have not yet been identified by the health agency.
The outbreak is expected to rise as illnesses reported after July 7 may not yet be linked to the outbreak.

*The symptoms of a Vibrio infection usually begin within 24 hours of ingesting contaminated food.
* Symptoms of a Vibrio infection include:
- watery diarrhea
- fever
- chills
- stomach cramps
- nausea, and
- vomiting
* In some cases, diarrhea and infection spread may be so severe that the ill person requires hospitalization.
* Vibrio infections can spread to other body systems and into the bloodstream, causing bacteremia.
* Potential long-term complications of Vibrio infections include: necrosis fasciitis (flesh-eating bacteria), skin and blood infections, amputation of limbs, and potentially, death.
The Investigation
The Maryland Department of Health is currently investigating this outbreak. As the investigation continues, more cases are likely to be linked to the outbreak. Because it typically takes 2 to 4 weeks for illnesses to be linked to an outbreak, there are likely more illnesses out there.
