How Do I Know If I Have a Salmonella Infection from this Outbreak?

Only a doctor can make a diagnosis of Salmonella infection. If you have eaten Empire Kosher chicken and have become sick, urgent medical attention is highly recommended. Also, early medical treatment can greatly reduce the risk for long-term complications.

It is best not to panic, but it is a good idea to monitor your health and symptoms in the days after eating at the restaurant.

The Outbreak

The United States Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a warning on August 24, 2018 that Empire Kosher brand raw chicken items, including raw whole chicken, raw chicken parts, were linked to Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:- illnesses in the northeastern  and mid-Atlantic United States. At this time, there are 16 confirmed illnesses, and one person in New York has died. The number of cases is expected to grow, as more reports come in.

The products were produced and sold to consumers from September 2017 to June 2018.

On August 29, 2018, the CDC confirmed it too was investigating the outbreak, stating that “epidemiologic and traceback evidence indicates that some kosher chicken products are contaminated with Salmonella I 4,[5],12:i:- and have made people sick.” The CDC further states that, in interviews with those who were ill, several people reported Empire Kosher brand.

The notice further confirmed that the outbreak strain was found and isolated in samples of raw chicken products collected from two facilities – including one facility that processes Empire Kosher chicken products.

The illnesses linked to the outbreak started on dates from September 25, 2017, to June 4, 2018.

Even if you are not sick, it is a good idea to monitor your symptoms for the time being. It is also a good idea though to hang onto your receipt, just in case you do develop symptoms of a Salmonella illness.

"Candess & Jory were extremely valuable resources for me when I contracted food poisoning. They guided me through every step of the legal process from start to finish, always willing to answer questions and be fully transparent. They were able to secure a settlement for me, but what I valued more was how truly concerned they were about my health and well-being beyond my case. I would gladly recommend Candess & Jory to anyone looking for attorneys who will fight on their behalf and really care about their clients."

I say this not only as a grateful client, but as a trial lawyer myself concentrating in personal injury with over 25 years experience. Jory has the knowledge, the skills, and the ability to handle big personal injury cases and my family and I are exceedingly pleased with the results and the justice that he obtained through very hard work for us.
