How Do I Know If I Have a Salmonella Infection from this Outbreak?

Only a doctor can make a diagnosis of Salmonella infection. If you have eaten precut melon and have become sick, urgent medical attention is highly recommended. Also, early medical treatment can greatly reduce the risk for long-term complications.

It is best not to panic, but it is a good idea to monitor your health and symptoms in the days after eating the precut melon products.

The Outbreak

CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Carrau infections linked to pre-cut melons supplied by Caito Foods LLC. At this time, there are 93 illnesses linked to the outbreak. Of these, 23 people have been hospitalized.

Thus far, fortunately, it appears that no one has died.

The outbreak is expected to rise as illnesses are reported and are still pending return of testing results may not yet be linked to the outbreak.

The Recall

On April 12, 2019, Caito Foods LLC recalled pre-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and pre-cut fruit medley products containing one of these melons supplied at the Caito Foods LLC facility in Indianapolis, Indiana. A full list of products can be found on the FDA’s website.

These products were distributed in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Consumers should not consume the product and should promptly dispose of any remaining product, even if you have already eaten some of the product and are not yet sick.

Monitor Your Health

Even if you are not sick, it is a good idea to monitor your symptoms for the time being. It is also a good idea though to hang onto your receipt, just in case you do develop symptoms of a Salmonella illness. If you suspect you have become infected with Salmonella after eating precut, medical attention is recommended.

"Candess & Jory were extremely valuable resources for me when I contracted food poisoning. They guided me through every step of the legal process from start to finish, always willing to answer questions and be fully transparent. They were able to secure a settlement for me, but what I valued more was how truly concerned they were about my health and well-being beyond my case. I would gladly recommend Candess & Jory to anyone looking for attorneys who will fight on their behalf and really care about their clients."

JOE, FORMER CLIENT

"I cannot recommend Jory Lange highly enough. When my father died, Jory was there and got an unbelievably great settlement (one of the highest settlements in America for for this type of case). I say this not only as a grateful client, but as a trial lawyer myself concentrating in personal injury with over 25 years experience. Jory has the knowledge, the skills, and the ability to handle big personal injury cases and my family and I are exceedingly pleased with the results and the justice that he obtained through very hard work for us.
